Business Experience
If you’re wondering why I seem to understand the business mind so well, it’s because I ran my own business for 24 years. It was a successful music store in Portland, Maine, where I wrote all my ad copy. I never took a single business course. No fancy graphs. No models. No charts. Just “seat of my pants” on the job training. Clearly, I made a lot of mistakes along the way - but always dusted myself off, and got right back up. Sound like anyone you know?
Journalism Background
I do have a college degree in English, which I never really used. But writing was always a great passion of mine. So, ten years ago, when I decided to change careers, writing was an obvious choice. At first, I wrote essays and commentaries for Maine Public Radio’s evening newscast. Then I had a weekly column in the Portland Press Herald (Maine’s largest daily newspaper.) One of my essays won the prestigious “AP Award For Writing In Broadcast Journalism.”
Copywriting Experience
Yet, rewarding as it was to see my name in print, it wasn’t paying the bills. So, that’s when I decided to try my hand at copywriting. With my extensive business background, it seemed like a “natural.” And it was! Before long I was writing articles, newsletters, employee profiles, direct mail, company stories, press releases and web copy for businesses like AFLAC, ERA Home Sellers, Pension Professionals, Ocean Bank, Hannaford Bros. (Maine’s largest supermarket chain) and Mercy Hospital.
Storytelling Skills
My storytelling skills were honed as I pursued screenwriting, playwriting and novels during that same period. I studied at the feet of the country’s “A List” writers, such as Michael Schiffer - screenwriter of Crimson Tide, Lean On Me, Colors and The Peacemaker. And "A List" teachers, such as Robert Mckee - the preeminent screenwriting teacher in America. It’s this storytelling expertise that uniquely qualifies me to tell your story and captivate your prospects.
